Alan Shearer is a man who doesn't automatically inspire respect in football fans when he starts spouting his opinion on the modern game, either on the sofa on Match Of The Day, or on the back pages of the nation's tabloids, with his monotone, predictable punditry style not exactly living up to the exciting standards of his playing days.
Now, Shearer has once again shown that he's a little out of touch with life in the Barclays Premier League in 2012 by stating that Fernando Torres will only be able to get his career back on track by quitting Chelsea.
There's no doubting that things haven't exactly gone to plan for poor old Torres since arriving in West London, with even a recent return to the blond locks of his Liverpool days not inspiring a return to goalscoring form, and you can't deny that the hefty price tag placed on his head and question marks surrounding over who precisely wanted him at the club made his task at Chelsea a difficult one, but a future away from the club wouldn't necessarily signal a return to the glory days of the Torres of old.
The first problem is: which club would take Torres? With the striker now not scoring in over 24 consecutive hours of first team soccer games for club and country, he hasn't exactly made himself a top transfer target since moving to London. Indeed, he's unlikely to command the same level of sympathy at a new club as he does at Stamford Bridge, where a surprisingly large section of the perhaps deluded Chelsea faithful continue to chant his name despite the frontman looking about as useful as a damp dishcloth in front of goal.
The second problem is: if the striker can't score at Chelsea, where will he be able to score? Chelsea's formation may not be ideal for him, but the likes of Juan Mata and Daniel Sturridge should make Torres's life a pretty easy one.
Either way, it would seem that there is little doubting that if Torres does leave Chelsea, he can kiss his career goodbye; not see a return to form, despite the ranting of Shearer.
